Athens, Greece (Sports Network)-
Denmark defended its Olympic title in women's handball Sunday, while Croatia added men's gold to the world championship it won last year.
Denmark earned a 38-36 victory over Korea in the women's gold medal match, but needed a penalty shootout to do so after the teams were tied at 34 following two five-minute overtime periods.
The key plays were made by Denmark goalkeeper Karin Oernhoej Mortensen, who stopped shots by Koreans Lim O Kyeong and Moon Pil Hee to give her team a chance to go ahead by two in the shootout.
Lotte Kiaerskou and Line Daugaard answered with goals at the other end each time, giving the Danes a 37-35 lead. Kim Cha Youn's goal then cut the deficit to one, but Henrietta Roende Mikkelsen put the game out of reach by scoring to make it 38-36 with only one chance left for Korea.
