NHL Game Summary - Calgary at Chicago
(Thursday, January 8th)
Final Score: Chicago 3, Calgary 1
Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - Steve Sullivan snapped a tie early in the third
period and Michael Leighton made 28 saves to lead the Chicago Blackhawks to a
3-1 victory over the Calgary Flames at the United Center.
Bryan Berard posted a goal and an assist for Chicago, which won for just the
fourth time in its last 14 games (4-7-2-1). Tyler Arnason registered three
assists while Kyle Calder also scored in the victory.
Oleg Saprykin notched the only goal for Calgary, which lost on the road for
the first time in eight tries.
Jamie McLennan turned aside 21-of-23 shots for the Flames, who, despite the
setback, are still 8-4-2 in their last 14 contests.
Sullivan's seventh marker of the season at the 2:34 mark of the final period
put Chicago ahead, 2-1. With Flames' blueliner Denis Gauthier in the box,
Berard took a slapshot from the right point. McLennan made the save, but
Sullivan was on the doorstep and poked the puck barely over the goal line for
the one-goal lead.
The Flames mounted a few moderately close scoring chances though the rest of
the contest, but Leighton proved to be too much before Berard's empty-net goal
in the final minute completed the scoring.
In the opening period, the teams traded goals to bring about a 1-1 tie after
20 minutes of action.
The Flames struck first at the 4:54 mark. When Chicago's Brett McLean was
whistled for tripping, the Calgary power play needed just 22 seconds to light
the lamp.
Robyn Regehr held control in the high slot before the puck eventually ended up
on the stick of Saprykin, who redirected home his seventh goal to stake the
Flames to the 1-0 advantage.
Later in the frame, Calder scored his 11th goal of the campaign to tie it up
for the Blackhawks. He skated in with Arnason on a 2-on-1 and beat McLennan
from the low slot with 3:10 to go.
A chippy second period saw a total of 13 shots taken. Calgary had three
power-play chances and Chicago gained a pair, but neither side could find the
back of the net as the score remained 1-1 when the teams went into the locker
room for the second intermission.
