NBA Game Summary - Boston at Utah
(Thursday, February 19th)
Final Score: Utah 90, Boston 85
Salt Lake City, UT (Sports Network) - Mehmet Okur scored 19 points, Deron Williams notched 18 points and 10 assists and Utah downed Boston, 90-85, in a game that finished the final half without injured Celtics star forward Kevin Garnett.
Garnett suffered a strained right knee while going up for a slam in the closing minutes of the first half, immediately limped off the floor and headed to the locker room. He scored eight points in limited action and did not return.
"As you know I suffered an injury, a strain to my right knee during the game tonight, and I really don't have any comment about it," Garnett said. "I will have the knee re-examined tomorrow, and we should have more information at that time. Obviously, I would much rather be playing instead of providing this statement."
Utah took advantage as Andrei Kirilenko scored 13 points in his comeback from surgery and Ronnie Brewer tallied 16 for the Jazz, who improved to 3-0 on their five-game homestand and to 23-6 at home for the season.
"That was a great win," Jazz head coach Jerry Sloan said. "I thought our guys really sucked it up and hung in there. It was tough all night."
Paul Pierce scored 20 points with nine boards, Rajon Rondo added 15 points and seven assists, while Kendrick Perkins and Ray Allen added 12 points apiece for the Celtics, who saw their two-game winning streak end.
"We would have loved to have him, obviously it probably would have made a difference tonight," Celtics head coach Doc Rivers said. "Unless he's close to 100 percent, I'd rather have him healthy for the playoffs, that's how I look at it."
Utah shot just 19 percent in putting up 13 first-quarter points, but stormed back to close within 39-38 at the half. The Celtics took a 66-60 edge into the final quarter, but the Jazz turned up their play on both ends of the floor.
Paul Millsap's three-point play capped seven straight Jazz points in the middle of the fourth quarter that put the hosts on top 77-76 with just under six minutes to play. Boston scored just five points in the last four minutes, as Utah prevailed for the win.
A jumper by Matt Harpring with 1:01 left handed the Jazz an 85-83 edge and Williams' tough fading jumper with 20.4 ticks to play made it a four-point game. Pierce answered with a driving layup with 16.4 ticks remaining, but Kirilenko connected on 1-of-2 free throws, and Harpring tapped out the second miss to Brewer, who was fouled and made both with six seconds left to seal the victory.
Utah shot 41.6 percent from the floor, but made only 2-of-10 threes...Boston drained 43.7 percent of its shots...The Celtics held a 43-35 edge on the backboards.
