| NOTES: |
|
To say that Matt Kenseth enjoys driving at Dover International Speedway
would be an understatement. Kenseth has a nice streak working at DIS, posting
seven straight top-10 finishes, including wins in 2006 and last year. Since
2006, Kenseth has failed to crack the top-10 just twice, both in the fall races
at "The Monster Mile."
Kenseth capitalized on a two-tire pit strategy during the final round of stops
to win for the 20th time in his Cup career. Jimmie Johnson and Carl Edwards
dominated most of the race by combining for 324 of 400 laps led. But Johnson
and Edwards took four tires each on their last stops, which ended up costing
both drivers an opportunity to win. The pit stops occurred during a caution
period with less than 40 laps remaining.
Mark Martin did not pit and led the way for the final restart with 34 laps to
go. Martin had been running in the 14th spot prior to the caution. Kenseth
moved around Martin for the lead shortly after the restart and then ran in
front for the final 32 laps around the one-mile, concrete surfaced track.
Kenseth finished 2.1 seconds ahead of Martin.
Currently second on the points list, Kenseth finished 10th last week and has
eight top-10 finishes, including a win at Daytona earlier this year.
Back in 2010, Kyle Busch benefited from Jimmie Johnson's pit-road speeding
penalty to win the spring race at Dover International Speedway.
Johnson, who was attempting to win at Dover for the third straight time,
dominated most of the race by leading 225 of 400 laps. But his drive-through
penalty on pit road allowed Busch to take the lead for good with 35 laps
remaining. Busch finished 7.6 seconds ahead of Jeff Burton to claim this race
for the second time in his career.
Johnson leads all active drivers with six wins at Dover, including one here in
September, 2010. He stands one victory away from tying Bobby Allison and
Richard Petty for most all-time wins at Dover. Johnson has three wins and seven
top-10 finishes in eight starts since 2008.
In the 2009 race at Dover, Johnson led 298 of 400 laps and finished 0.861
seconds ahead of runner-up Tony Stewart for his 42nd career Cup Series
victory.
Greg Biffle and Busch dominated this race in 2008, as the duo combined to
exchange the lead on seven occasions, Biffle led for 164 laps, and Busch ran
in front for 158. Busch reclaimed the advantage on lap 327 and held it for a
4.224-second win. Biffle placed third.
In 2007, Martin Truex Jr dominated the race by leading 216 laps. Truex beat
pole sitter Ryan Newman by 7.355 seconds. Newman led seven times for 135 laps,
but it was Truex who reclaimed the lead on lap 347 and held it for his first
career Sprint Cup victory. Truex, who started 26th, picked up his first win in
his 58th start.
Matt Kenseth clipped Jamie McMurray by less than one second in the 2006 race
for his 12th career Cup win. Kenseth, who started 19th, posted a 0.787 of a
second victory. He grabbed the lead from McMurray with four laps remaining.
McMurray, who started ninth, led a total of 95 laps. Pole sitter Ryan Newman
led for the first 12 laps and finished 14th.
Kyle Petty holds the record for winning at Dover from the furthest starting
position. Petty started 37th in the 1995 race. The top three starting positions
at Dover have proven to be very productive in the 84 races held at "The Monster
Mile." The pole sitter has captured 13 races, while second and third have
combined for 27 victories.
This and that from Dover: The first Sprint Cup Series race was held on July 5,
1969. The first two races at Dover were 300 miles. The race length was changed
to 500 miles in 1971. The first NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Dover was May
15, 1982. The track surface was changed to concrete in 1995. The race length
was changed to 400 miles beginning with the second race in 1997. The first
Truck Series race was held in September 2000. There have been 84 Sprint Cup
races at Dover International Speedway since the track opened in 1969. There
was one race in 1969 and 1970. There has been two-a-year since 1971. There
have been 35 different pole winners at Dover led by David Pearson (six).
Pearson won the first Sprint Cup pole at Dover in July 1969. Mark Martin, Ryan
Newman and Jeff Gordon lead all active drivers, each with four poles at Dover.
32 different drivers have posted victories at Dover led by Bobby Allison and
Richard Petty, each with seven. Richard Petty won the first Sprint Cup race at
Dover. Johnson leads all active drivers with six victories at Dover. The track
name was changed to Dover International Speedway in 2002. 51 races at Dover
have been won from a top-five starting position; 18 races have been won from a
starting position outside the top 10. 13 drivers have won from the pole. The
last to do so was Jimmie Johnson, in the 2010 September race.
The next Sprint Cup Series race is the June 10th running of the Pocono 400 at
Pocono Raceway. Jeff Gordon won last year's race there.
