Concord, NC (Sports Network) - Carl Edwards won Saturday night's NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race and collected a $1.2 million prize, but wrecked his car while he did a celebratory burnout on the infield grass at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Edwards exited the pits first during a mandatory four-tire stop prior to the start of the final 10-lap segment. He then held off a hard-charging Kyle Busch, the pole sitter, during the closing laps to win his first all-star race at Charlotte. His previous best finish in this event was fourth, which came in 2006.

"[Crew chief] Bob Osborne and my team, especially the guys on pit road, could have dropped the ball; that was all the pressure in the world on those guys," Edwards said. "They performed a flawless pit stop, and we got out in front of Kyle. He is so good on those restarts. If we would have started behind him, I think it would have been really tough."

His No.99 Roush Fenway Racing Ford sustained heavy damage to the front end when he ran over a manhole cover on the infield grass. After Edwards did his trademarked backflip from his car and then ran over to the grandstands to celebrate with the fans, his car had to be towed into victory lane.

Edwards apologized to his crew on the team radio for the incident.

"I had no clue that drain was there," he said. "I guess NASCAR is mad, because we're hiding something with that car. That was a pretty big accident."

Edwards and team owner, Jack Roush, joked about the accident.

"He said I could come work on that thing this week if I would like to," Edwards noted.

Edwards led the way after the second and third segments concluded.

Busch finished second, followed by David Reutimann, Tony Stewart and Greg Biffle, who led the most laps with 46.

"We knew the game when we started playing it, but unfortunately, we just didn't quite have enough there in the final 10 [laps] of the race," Busch said. "I thought we had a winning car. We sat on the pole. We got beat on speed tonight, and it was just second best."

Matt Kenseth, Denny Hamlin, David Ragan, Kevin Harvick and Ryan Newman completed the top-10.

Dale Earnhardt Jr., who advanced into the all-star race by winning the fan vote, finished 14th.

Ragan and Brad Keselowski finished 1-2, respectively, in the 40-lap preliminary Sprint Showdown event to move on to the main event. Keselowski experienced brake issues early in the all-star race and wound up finishing one lap behind in 18th.

There were no major crashes or altercations during the 100-lap race. Kasey Kahne got loose and made contact with the wall on lap 59. Kenseth and Regan Smith, who made his first appearance in this race, shot up the track and scraped the wall after making slight contact with Kenseth 25 laps from the finish. Smith gained eligibility for the race when he won at Darlington earlier this month.
