Liu to face Shim in U.S. Junior final

Stratham, NH (Sports Network) - Jim Liu and Andy Hyeon Bo Shim will face each other for the title at the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship, after both advanced through the quarterfinals and semifinals Friday.

Liu, one of three stroke-play medalists, earned a 3 & 2 victory over Nicolo Galletti in his first match of the day at The Golf Club of New England. He then used a strong finish to take down Matthew Scobie in the semis.

Liu was 1-up through 15 holes before winning the 16th when Scobie stumbled to a bogey. Liu then birdied No. 17 to clinch the 3 & 1 victory.

The New York native is trying to earn his second title at this event. Liu became the youngest winner in the history of the championship in 2010, when he was just 14 years old.

"It feels good knowing that I played well in basically all my matches to get here," Liu said. "But things still aren't done yet and I have to take it one step at a time and pace myself."

Shim recorded a 4 & 2 defeat of Joo-Young Lee in the quarterfinals, then led for most of his match against Nicolas Echavarria, another stroke-play medalist.

Echavarria trimmed Shim's lead to 1-up after Shim bogeyed the 12th, but couldn't get the match to all-square as the two parred the next four holes. At the 17th, a par 3, Shim had a bogey but got the win thanks to Echavarria's double.

The 36-hole final is set to start Saturday at 8:00 a.m. (et).
