Vogel trounces Aylwin in Publinx final
Midway, UT (Sports Network) - T.J. Vogel won the first two holes on Saturday and never looked back as he rolled to a 12 & 10 win over Kevin Aylwin in the 36-hole final at the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship.
Vogel's large margin of victory was the second biggest in event history. In 1985, Jim Sorenson routed Jay Cooper, 12 & 11, for the only 36-hole final to end faster than this match.
Aylwin, 23, missed a par putt on the first to fall 1-down and Vogel made it two wins in a row as he drained a 7-footer for birdie on No. 2.
Vogel pushed his lead to 3-up with a 12-foot birdie effort on the fourth. Two holes later, Vogel got up and down for a par, which was enough to extend his margin to 4-up.
On No. 8, Aylwin failed to get up and down for par on the par-5, but Vogel did make par after hitting a greenside bunker in two.
Aylwin missed an 18-footer on No. 11 to fall 6-down. Vogel turned it on from there.
Vogel, 21, birdied the 13th from 10 feet out, then got up and down for birdie on No. 16. Vogel rolled in a 12-foot birdie try at the 17th to go 10-up.
Vogel posted his eighth birdie of the opening 18 at the 18th, but Aylwin matched him to remain 10-down after the morning session.
The second 18 never made it to the turn. The duo matches pars on the first three holes, then both birdied the 22nd. Aylwin failed to make par from a bunker on the par-3 23rd to slip 11-down.
After a pair of matching pars, Vogel reached the green at the 26th in two. He lagged his eagle try within concession range and the match was over.
