Women's World Amateur Team Format

The Women's World Amateur Team Championship, conducted by the InternationalGolf Federation (formerly the World Amateur Golf Council), which comprises thenational governing bodies of golf in more than 120 countries are a biennialinternational amateur golf competition rotated among three geographic zones:Asia-Pacific, Americas and Europe-Africa. The Turkish Golf Federationwill host the 2012 Women's World Amateur Team Championships.
FORMAT: Each team, which has two or three players, plays 18holes of stroke play for four days. In each round, the total of the twolowest scores by players from each team constitutes the team score for theround. The four-day (72-hole) total is the team's score for the championship.
SCORING: During the Espirito Santo Trophy competition, 18holes of stroke play will be conducted Thursday, September 27th through Sunday,September 30th.
PRIZES: The winning team in the women's competitionreceives custody of the Espirito Santo Trophy for the ensuing two years.Members of the winning team receive gold medals; members of the second-placeteam receive silver medals; and members of the third-place team receive bronzemedals. The lowest individual score in the championship is recognized at therespective awards ceremony, but no prize is awarded.
THE CUP: The Cup once belonged to the Tsar of Russia,Nicolas II. (It is rumored to once have been gold plated.) After the RussianRevolution of 1917 the precious belongings of the Royal Family werescattered in auction sales and Ricardo and Silvia Espirito Santo of Portugalbought the Cup. The original intention was for a Portuguese Internationalevent, but as it was only played once or twice the Trophy then had nodestination. Vicomtesse de Saint Sauveur, the co-founder of the Women's World Amateur Team Championship in 1964, contacted the Espirito Santoswhen she heard the Cup might be available. They were thrilled to give theTrophy, through the Portuguese Golf Federation, for the inaugural event.
