NOTES: One of the most storied events in USGA history, the 112th U.S. Amateur Championship begins in earnest Monday at Cherry Hills Country Club in Cherry Hills Village, Colorado and CommonGround Golf Course in Aurora, Colorado. Both courses will be used for the stroke-play portion of the championship, while Cherry Hills will host the match play rounds.
The U.S. Amateur Championship is the oldest golf championship in this country, one day older than the U.S. Open. Except for an eight-year period, 1965-1972, when it was stroke play, the Amateur has been a match-play championship.
Jordan Spieth will try to improve upon his quarterfinal performance from last year. The 19-year-old from Dallas, Texas was the 2011 U.S. Junior Amateur Champion and 2011 United States Walker Cup team member. Spieth finished tied for 21st in the U.S. Open at Olympic Club in June.
The USGA accepted 6,443 entries for the 2012 U.S. Amateur. The most entries ever received for an Amateur championship was 7,920 in 1999 when the U.S. Amateur was played at Pebble Beach (California) Golf Links.
The 2012 tournament will be the ninth USGA championship to be conducted at Cherry Hills Country Club and the second U.S. Amateur. Phil Mickelson won the 1990 Amateur at Cherry Hills, which is one of three courses to host the U.S. Open, U.S. Amateur, U.S. Women's Open and U.S. Senior Open. Winged Foot and Hazeltine National Golf Club have also hosted all four USGA championships. Cherry Hills also hosted the 1941 and 1985 PGA Championships. This will be the 31st USGA championship conducted in the state of Colorado, and the fourth U.S. Amateur.
At 7,432 yards, Cherry Hills Country Club is the fourth longest course in the history of the U.S. Amateur. Erin Hills played at 7,760 yards last year, while Chambers Bay played at 7,742 yards the previous year. In 2006, Hazeltine National Golf Clubs yardage was 7,473. This is the 15th time that a U.S. Amateur course has played to 7,000-plus yards. In 1962, Pinehurst No. 2 was the first course to be set up at more than 7,000 yards (7,051).
Last year, Kelly Kraft defeated Patrick Cantlay, the No. 1 ranked amateur, 2-up in the final to win at Erin Hills. Cantlay was heavily favored in the 36-hole final. He was the No. 1 ranked amateur player in the world and in the summer of 2011 had a magical run on the PGA Tour, posting four top 25s and firing a 60 in the second round of the Travelers Championship. Kraft will not be on hand to defend his title, as he has since turned professional along with Cantlay.
In 2009, Byeong-Hun An became the youngest U.S. Amateur champion in history, as he defeated Ben Martin in the final, 7 & 5. At 17 years, 11 months and 13 days, An surpassed 2008 winner Danny Lee as the youngest champion.
New Zealand's Lee jumped in front of Drew Kittleson on the 10th hole of the morning round in 2008 and never looked back, as he won 5 & 4. Lee, at the time, became the youngest champion in U.S. Amateur history at 18 years and 1 month, six months younger than Tiger Woods when Woods won the first of his three straight amateur titles in 1994.
Five of the last nine champions have been foreign-born - An (Korea, 2009), Lee (New Zealand, 2008), Richie Ramsay (Scotland, 2006), Edoardo Molinari (Italy, 2005) and Nick Flanagan (Australia, 2003).
In a seesaw match in 2007, Colt Knost outlasted Michael Thompson in the final, 2 & 1, to become just the second player ever to win both the U.S. Amateur Public Links and U.S. Amateur titles in the same year, joining Ryan Moore, who accomplished the feat in 2004.
In 2006, Richie Ramsay of Scotland defeated American John Kelly in the final, 4 & 2, to become the first Scotsman to win this championship in over 100 years. Ramsay became the first Scotsman to win since Findlay Douglas in 1898.
Back in 2005, Italy's Edoardo Molinari needed just 18 putts through 15 holes of the second round and overcame an early 3-down deficit to beat Dillon Dougherty of Woodland, California, for the title at Merion Golf Club, 4 & 3. Molinari, who won the 2001 Italian Amateur and 2003 Turkish Amateur, became the first Italian to win the U.S. Amateur crown. The only other Italian to win a USGA title was Silvia Cavalleri, who won the 1997 U.S. Women's Amateur. Molinari became the first European to win this event since Harold Hilton in 1911.
Current PGA Tour player Ryan Moore won the last four holes in 2004, three of them with birdies, to overtake Luke List, and win the title. Moore also won the NCAA Division I individual title and the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship earlier that summer.
The 2013 U.S. Amateur will be played at The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts, which will be followed by Atlanta Athletic Club in Johns Creek, Georgia in 2014.
