Sahl grabs lead in Alberta

Fort McMurray, AB (Sports Network) - Danny Sahl posted a five-under 67 Saturday to grab a two-stroke lead after three rounds of the inaugural Syncrude Boreal Open.

Sahl, who is winless on the Canadian Tour, completed 54 holes at 14-under-par 202 at Fort McMurray Golf Club.

Brett Kanda fired a seven-under 65 to jump into second place at minus-12. Roger Sloan, who had at least a piece of the lead after the first two rounds, managed a one-under 71 in round three, but dropped into third place at 11- under-par 205.

Sahl got off to a rough start as he bogeyed the second and third to slide to minus-seven. He erased those mistakes with birdies on the fifth and eighth, which are both par-fives.

The 31-year-old Canadian poured in three straight birdie chances from the 11th to jump to minus-12. After a pair of pars, Sahl notched back-to-back birdies from the 16th to grab the third-round lead.

Dustin Risdon is alone in fourth place at nine-under-par 207 after shooting three-under 69 on Saturday. Byron Smith also posted a 69 in the third round and is alone in fifth at minus-eighth.

Kyle Kallan and Chris Killmer both fired six-under 66s to jump from a tie for 40th into a share of sixth place at seven-under-par 209. They were joined there by Mauricio Molina (71), Russell Surber (73), Benjamin Alvarado (69), David Dragoo (74) and Wes Homan (69).

NOTES: The round was completed despite a lengthy weather delay on Saturday...Sahl has been a Canadian Tour member since 2005 and his best previous tour finish was a tie for fifth, which he did twice in 2010...If Sloan can rally for the win, he would be the second two-time winner this season on the Canadian Tour.
