| NOTES: |
|
The Canadian Grand Prix at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal is the
seventh round on the 2013 Formula One calendar.
The have been 43 previous F1-sanctioned Canadian GPs. Jack Brabham won the
inaugural race in 1967. The event was held at Mosport Park, as were the races
in 1969, 1971-74 and 1976-77. In 1968 and '70, the event was held at Mont-
Tremblant. It moved to its present site in 1978 and has been there since then.
The Canadian GP was not held in 1975, '87 and 2009.
Originally named the Ile Notre-Dame Circuit, it was renamed in honor of Gilles
Villeneuve after his death on May 8, 1982, caused by an accident during the
final qualifying session for the Belgian Grand Prix. In 1978, Villeneuve won
the inaugural grand prix held on the island.
Of the current F1 calendar, the other circuit named in honor of a former
driver is the Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace, home of the Brazilian Grand Prix in
Sao Paulo.
Michael Schumacher holds the record for most victories in the Canadian GP with
seven. Schumacher, who retired from F1 for good at the conclusion of the 2012
season, posted three consecutive wins in this race from 2002-04. His other
victories there came in 1994, '97, '98 and 2000.
Lewis Hamilton from Mercedes is the only active driver who has multiple
victories in the Canadian GP. Hamilton scored his first career F1 grand prix
win and pole victory in this race in 2007. He also won in Canada in 2010 and
2012. All three of those wins came when he drove for McLaren.
Thierry Boutsen (1989), Jean Alesi (1995) and Robert Kubica (2008) also scored
their maiden F1 wins in the Canadian GP.
Round 8 in this year's F1 world championship is the June 30 British Grand Prix
in Silverstone, England. Mark Webber won last year's race there.
