Description: Red Sox starter Jon Lester faced one batter over the minimum in a complete-game one-hit shutout Friday against the Blue Jays.
Insight: Lester allowed a double to Maicer Izturis in the sixth, but otherwise was perfect. After posting the worst ERA of his career last season, Lester has bounced back by going 5-0 with a 2.73 ERA and a 0.99 WHIP.

4/30/2013 10:49:00 PM
Description: Red Sox starter Jon Lester had his worst start of the season Tuesday against the Blue Jays, allowing six runs (five earned) on six hits in six innings.
Insight: Lester (3.11 ERA) has actually had two poor starts in a row, as he walked six and gave up six hits in his last start, but he won the last one to improve to 4-0. A 5-0 record was not in the cards this April, but Lester still has had an infinitely better month than April 2012, when he went 1-2 with a 4.65 ERA.

Hot4/13/2013 9:43:00 PM
Description: Red Sox starter Jon Lester tossed seven strong innings Saturday versus Tampa Bay (7 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 5 Ks).
Insight: Lester trimmed his ERA to 1.42 during the outing. He'll be on the mound again Thursday at Cleveland.

Hot4/7/2013 4:02:00 PM
Description: Boston lefthander Jon Lester improved to 2-0 Sunday with a win over the Blue Jays.
Insight: He tossed seven scoreless frames for the Sox, who enter Monday's home opener with four wins and just two losses. Lester struck out six without walking a batter. Believe it or not, this is the first time since 2007 Lester has won his first two decisions of the year. He carries a 1.50 ERA in 12 innings this season.

4/7/2013 10:13:00 AM
Description: Red Sox starter Jon Lester has done well against most of the hitters in Toronto's lineup. He'll face them Sunday. Lester (3.60 ERA, 7/2 K/BB) had an impressive spring and won his first start of the season.
Insight: The Blue Jays can mash, but haven't against Lester. Jose Bautista is 10-for-45 (.222), Edwin Encarnacion is 4-for-21 (.190), J.P. Arencibia is 5-for-26 (.192), Colby Rasmus is 2-for-9 (.222) and Adam Lind is 3-for-27 (.111) with 10 strikeouts against Boston's left-hander.

Description: Jon Lester has been announced as the Red Sox's Opening Day starter. SOURCE: Brian MacPherson, Providence Journal
Insight: He'll toe the rubber April 1st at Yankee Stadium. Lester had a tough year in 2012 (9-14, 4.82 ERA) but he's pitched well this spring (3-0, 0.75 in six starts).

3/17/2013 4:58:00 PM
Description: Boston lefty Jon Lester threw 79 pitches over six perfect innings Sunday.
Insight: Opposing batters are 6-for-65 (.092) against Lester this spring, and he has allowed two earned runs in 20 innings. The lefty lost 14 games and had a 4.82 ERA last season but he's poised for a bounce-back campaign.

3/14/2013 3:20:00 PM
Description: Boston lefty Jon Lester has posted a 1.29 ERA in 14 innings this spring.
Insight: Lester had a miserable 4.82 ERA in 2012 but his FIP was 4.11 and his xFIP was 3.82 so a turnaround wouldn't be out of the question.

8/24/2012 9:41:00 PM
Description: Red Sox lefthander Jon Lester was pulled from the game in the eighth inning Friday night after suffering what appeared to be a left hamstring injury.
Insight: Lester (7-10, 4.98 ERA) came up lame on a 2-0 offering and walked off the field with a noticeable limp upon his departure. We should know more about the severity of this injury when Lester addresses the media after the game.

8/24/2012 7:44:00 PM
Description: Boston placed starting pitcher Jon Lester on trade waivers on Friday.
Insight: Lester is probably a longshot to get dealt now that the Sox are in heavy talks with the Dodgers regarding Josh Beckett, Carl Crawford and Adrian Gonzalez but anything is possible.

8/18/2012 8:06:00 PM
Description: Boston starter Jon Lester won his second straight start with another solid performance Saturday against the Yankees.
Insight: Since he bottomed out by allowing 11 earned runs in four innings on July 22, Lester has only allowed 13 earned runs in 33 2/3 innings.

8/12/2012 5:37:00 PM
Description: Boston starter Jon Lester struck out 12 Indians Sunday to pick up his first win since June 27.
Insight: Lester held Cleveland to three hits and one run in six innings Sunday. His ERA is still 5.20, but he has pitched somewhat better as of late, allowing 12 earned runs on 20 hits in 26 2/3 innings over four starts since allowing 11 earned runs to Toronto on July 22.

Cold8/2/2012 10:06:00 PM
Description: Boston starter Jon Lester lost his ninth game Thursday against Minnesota but his start has to be considered a victory for fantasy owners. Lester went eight strong innings and allowed three runs on seven hits. Most importantly, he walked none against seven strikeouts.
Insight: Lester came in having allowed 25 earned runs on 29 hits, 12 walks and seven homers in 18 1/3 innings over his previous four starts, so Thursday was a positive stride for the lefty.

Cold7/22/2012 3:57:00 PM
Description: Boston lefty Jon Lester imploded Sunday en route to giving up a career high 11 runs against the Blue Jays. Lester also matched a career-high by surrendering five walks.
Insight: Lester's ERA rose from 4.80 at the start of the outing to 5.46 by the time his meltdown was finished when Bobby Valentine took the ball from him with no outs in the top of the fifth inning. It's hard to believe Lester was an All-Star last year with the way he has pitched recently. In Lester's last three starts, he has allowed 21 earned runs and 25 hits over 12 1/3 innings pitched (15.32 ERA). The Red Sox might be forced to make a decision regarding Lester's future if his struggles continue. Trading him (though his value is incredibly low right now), sending him down to the minor leagues or placing him on the DL are all possibilities right now for the once-dominant lefthander.

7/17/2012 10:28:00 PM
Description: Red Sox lefty Jon Lester got rocked Tuesday night against the White Sox. In four innings, the two-time All-Star surrendered seven hits and six runs, walking three and striking out four. He threw 91 pitches.
Insight: The kiss of death was the towering three-run homer he allowed to Kevin Youkilis in the fourth inning. This was the fourth time this season Lester has allowed five or more runs in a start. Lester (5-7, 4.80 ERA) is still Boston's No. 1 starter but he sure isn't pitching like it this season.

6/27/2012 8:47:00 PM
Description: Boston left-hander Jon Lester won his fifth game of the season Wednesday against Toronto.
Insight: By definition, Lester didn't throw a quality start, but his seven innings and four earned runs allowed were more than enough to earn the victory Wednesday. The lefty's ERA rose to 4.53, but his solid 79/27 K/BB ratio, .325 BABIP and 66.2 percent strand rate suggest that a turnaround is in order.

5/25/2012 11:17:00 PM
Description: Boston left-hander Jon Lester allowed seven runs on six hits in four innings against the Rays on Friday.
Insight: Lester's ERA ballooned to 4.72. He's really been hit or miss this season, though he did win three of his last four decisions prior to Friday.

5/14/2012 10:08:00 PM
Description: Jon Lester helped Boston extend its winning streak to four games Monday by tossing nine innings of eight-hit ball against the Mariners. Lester didn't allow a run until he let one run come across with two outs in the ninth inning before striking out Alex Liddi to end the game.
Insight: It was Lester's second complete game of the year. Lester lowered his ERA from 4.29 to 3.71 in the nine-inning effort. His next start will come Saturday against the Phillies.

4/28/2012 10:03:00 PM
Description: Jon Lester turned in his best performance of the year Saturday night against the White Sox. The 28-year-old lefthander hurled seven shutout innings while allowing just five hits and one walk. He struck out seven.
Insight: Lester was dominant Saturday and really, with the exception of one awful outing against the Rangers a couple weeks back, it's been a pretty good opening month for the Red Sox ace. It was Lester's first win of 2012 and it brought Boston back to .500 for the year (10-10).

4/17/2012 11:06:00 PM
Description: Jon Lester's third outing of the season was a disaster. The 28-year-old lefthander allowed eight hits and seven earned runs in just two innings of work Tuesday night in Boston's 18-3 loss to the Rangers.
Insight: As bad as Lester was, his pitching performance wasn't even the worst of the night. Mark Melancon allowed six earned runs (including three homers) without recording a single out in the eighth inning, raising his season ERA to 49.50. Pitching continues to be a major problem for the struggling Red Sox.
