Description: Jenifer Langosch from MLB.com is reporting that Cardinals shortstop Rafael Furcal will undergo Tommy John surgery on his right elbow.
Insight: Barring some kind of medical miracle, we won't see Furcal on the field this season. With Furcal sidelined, Pete Kozma (.333, 2 HR, 14 RBI) and Ronny Cedeno (.259, 4 HR, 22 RBI) will platoon at shortstop for St. Louis. Neither is fantasy-worthy.

Insight: Same story, different year. Furcal has never been a quick healer, which is probably why he's only played 100 games once in his previous three seasons. Even when he's healthy, Furcal (.264, 5 HR, 49 RBI, 12 SB in 2012) is a late-round flyer at best.

Description: St. Louis Cardinals shortstop Rafael Furcal continues to be bothered by right elbow pain when he throws the ball. The team suggested that the switch-hitter only batted right-handed to limit the stress caused on his elbow. SOURCE: St. Louis Post-Dispatch
Insight: Furcal missed the final two months of last season with a torn ulnar collateral ligament but said the ligament has not caused him any pain. The soreness is being caused by a bone spur in his elbow. Furcal and the Cardinals continue to say that the season opener is not a question.

Description: St. Louis Cardinals shortstop Rafael Furcal's injured right elbow is healed and he's been given no limitations in spring training, according to the Cardinals' website.
Insight: Furcal missed the final month of last season with a torn ulnar collateral ligament. He batted .264 with 69 runs, 5 HR, 49 RBI and 12 SB in 121 games last season and is still the Cardinals' best shortstop option.

Insight: An MRI on Monday confirmed this. Furcal missed the final month of the season with a torn ulnar collateral ligament. He'll have a chance to compete for the team's starting shortstop job in spring training.

Description: The Cardinals have officially ruled shortstop Rafael Furcal out for the season. Furcal has been out since the end of August because of an elbow injury.
Insight: St. Louis was holding out hope that Furcal (.264, 5 HR, 49 RBI) would be able to return late in the season or in the playoffs but it was always a bit of a long shot. He should be fine for the start of spring training next season.

Insight: Furcal (.264, 5 HR, 49 RBI) had been set to have season-ending Tommy John surgery but that procedure appears to be off the table now that tests have shown that Furcal's UCL isn't actually torn. It's a long shot, but Furcal could still be back before the end of the year.

Insight: Furcal will try to rehab and return in 4-6 weeks. However, there's almost no chance he'll play in another regular season game, so fantasy owners can cut him loose.

Description: Cardinals shortstop Rafael Furcal is batting .219 (51-for-233) in his last 58 games, but he does have 13 hits in 44 at-bats in the second half and a favorable matchup Thursday against Dodgers starter Chris Capuano.
Insight: Furcal reached .370 on May 16 and then went into a dramatic tailspin, but he has slowly been getting his average back up. Plus, he is 8-for-22 (.364) in his career against Capuano.

Insight: Furcal was dropped to eighth in the batting order for the series opener but he returned to the leadoff spot Saturday after a strong showing on Friday (2-4 with a double). He's hitting .279 for the season with five homers and 38 RBIs. Furcal has also stolen 12 bases.

Insight: Furcal also contributed an RBI single in the fifth so it was a pretty productive afternoon for the 34-year-old. Furcal got off to a roaring start this season (.333, 4 HRs, 23 RBIs in April/May) but since June began he has had a much harder time at the plate (.190, 1 HR, 13 RBIs).

Insight: Furcal is just 2-for-16 (.125) in his career against Sanchez. Take him out of the lineup and hope he can get back into a groove in the second half.
