The LPGA Tour travels to Alabama this week for the Mobile Bay LPGA Classic.
This event is being held at Magnolia Grove Golf Course, which is part of the
Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail. Three of the top 12 players in the world are
in the field -- defending champion Stacy Lewis (2), Jiyai Shin (7) and Karrie
Webb (12).
The LPGA Tournament of Champions was held at Magnolia Grove from 1999-2007.
Some of the past winners of that tournament were: Webb, Se Ri Pak, Lorena
Ochoa and Paula Creamer. Christina Kim, Webb, Angela Stanford, Maria Hjorth
and Lewis are players who have won on Magnolia Grove playing this week.
Lewis has two wins this year on the LPGA Tour and has seven top-10 finishes,
including her last three events. She is currently second on the money list to
world No. 1 Inbee Park. Ariya Jutanugarn is in the field and is one of the
hottest players on tour. The 17-year-old has finished in the top-4 in all four
events she has played this season, including a runner-up finish at the Honda
LPGA Thailand in her home country. Jutanugarn is currently ranked 16th in the
world.
Last year, Lewis fended off Lexi Thompson down the stretch in the final round
to win. Lewis carded four rounds in the 60s to finish at 17-under-par 271 and
win for the second time on the LPGA Tour. Thompson fired a 7-under 65 on the
final day to finish one back at minus-16.
In 2010, Se Ri Pak made birdie from a fairway bunker to win a 3-way playoff at
the rain-shortened event. Pak outlasted Brittany Lincicome and Suzann
Pettersen in the playoff to capture her 25th career LPGA Tour victory. With
the win, her first since the 2007 Jamie Farr Owens Corning Classic, Pak moved
to 6-0 all-time in playoffs on the LPGA Tour.
The 2009 version was not held that year, as the venue for the tournament
underwent significant enhancements in the neighborhood of $5.1 million. In
addition, the date was changed to a spring date.
Angela Stanford captured the 2008 tournament when it became the first
full-field, LPGA Tour event at Magnolia Grove Golf Course. Despite a final
round of 73, Stanford edged Shanshan Feng by one shot.
The LPGA Tour heads to Paradise Island in the Bahamas next week for the
inaugural Pure Silk-Bahamas LPGA Classic at Ocean Club Golf Course.
