Gonzales eagles 18th, wins Saskatchewan Open
Saskatoon, SK (Sports Network) - Andres Gonzales eagled the 18th hole Sunday
and shot a nine-under 63 to win the Saskatchewan Open by one shot.
Gonzales finished at 14-under 274 and claimed $24,000 for his first Canadian
Tour victory.
Hugo Leon shot a seven-under 65 and tied for second place with Scott Gibson
(67) at 13-under 275. George Coetzee, the third-round leader, had a 71 and
dropped into fourth place at 11-under 277.
The par-five 18th, reachable in two shots, was downwind Sunday and Gonzales
knocked his second over the green. He explained what happened next.
"I had to fly my third about 10 feet onto the green with a 60-degree wedge,"
he said. "It landed perfectly and just rolled down into the hole."
Gibson, with a chance to catch Gonzales, bogeyed the 17th and then only
managed a birdie at the 18th, ending a stroke back with Leon.
"I fully expected to be in a playoff," said Gonzales. "The 18th wasn't all
that difficult today and I figured Scott would probably force a playoff one
way or the other.
"Today was one of those days where everything went well."
