Coe, Sloan share lead in Alberta
Ft. McMurray, AB (Sports Network) - Alex Coe and Roger Sloan shot matching seven-under 65s to share the lead after one round of the inaugural Syncrude Boreal Open.
Coe had seven birdies in a flawless round, while Sloan had 10 birdies and three bogeys at Ft. McMurray Golf Club. Sloan is coming off his first Canadian Tour victory two weeks ago at The Western Championship, while Coe is also a one-time winner on tour, though that came back in 2008.
Jeff Cuzzort, Thomas Petersson, Adam Hadwin and Brett Kanda all share third at six-under 66. Hadwin is the only one of the four who has won before, with two victories, including one this year at the Pacific Colombia Tour Championship.
Devin Carrey, Cody Slover, Johnny Bloomfield, Craig Leslie, David Dragoo, Matt Marshall and Matthew Rosen are all knotted in seventh at minus-five.
Coe's and Sloan's groupings were only 10 minutes apart, though Coe was on the 10th tee and Sloan the first.
Coe had only two birdies on his first nine holes -- at Nos. 10 and 17 -- before catching fire around the turn.
He began his final nine with a birdie at the first hole, then poured in three straight birdies from the fifth. He ended his round with a birdie at the par- four ninth to get to seven-under.
Sloan got rolling on the third, where he began a string of four straight birdies. After a par on the seventh, Sloan birdied eight and nine to make the turn at six-under.
He started the back nine with a bogey, but responded with two straight birdies from the 11th to get to seven-under for the first time.
Sloan moved to eight-under with a birdie at No. 14, but slipped with a bogey at the 16th. He closed his round with a birdie at the 17th and a bogey at the closing 18th to share the lead with Coe.
NOTES: The tour's money leader, Jose de Jesus Rodriguez, is playing on the Nationwide Tour's Mexico Open this week...Sloan is No. 2 on the money list.
