NCAA Game Summary - Tulsa at UCF
(Thursday, November 3rd)
Final Score: Tulsa 24, UCF 17
Orlando, FL (Sports Network) - Clay Sears caught the go-ahead score in the fourth quarter and Tulsa held UCF near the goal line late in the final frame to take a 24-17 victory on Thursday.
G.J. Kinne passed for 203 yards and a score on 15-of-28 attempts and also had 92 yards on 14 carries for the Golden Hurricane (6-3, 5-0 C-USA), who remain undefeated in conference play.
"We consider this a huge win," said Tulsa coach Bill Blankenship. "If you're going to make a run at the conference championship, you have to go through teams like UCF."
Jeff Godfrey was 16-for-23 for 226 yards and a score for the Knights (4-5, 2-3), who have dropped three of four.
Trailing by a point, Tulsa went ahead with a 10-play, 72-yard drive that saw Sears catch a 16-yard score and Bryan Burnham catch a pass for the two-point conversion and a 24-17 lead with 8:23 to play.
A good kickoff return and a 41-yard catch by J.J. Worton got the ball down to the Tulsa five, but Godfrey's pass to Adam Nissley on fourth down fell incomplete with under five minutes to play.
"We had an opportunity in the end to put points up and we didn't get that done," said UCF coach George O'Leary.
Tulsa then converted a pair of third downs and was able to kill off the rest of the clock.
Worton caught a 28-yard score from Godfrey on UCF's first possession of the game, but Willie Carter's 19-yard score later in the first tied the game for Tulsa.
Kevin Fitzpatrick hit field goals of 36 and 25 yards in the second to give the Golden Hurricane the lead, but Ronnie Weaver's six-yard score with just over a minute to play in the half gave the Knights a 14-13 lead at the break.
Fitzpatrick's 25-yard field goal accounted for the only points of the third quarter, but Shawn Moffitt gave UCF a 17-16 lead just over three minutes into the fourth with a 29-yard field goal.
