Cedar Falls, IA (Sports Network) - Papa Dia's double-double of 17 points and 21 rebounds led the way for SMU, as the Mustangs defeated the Northern Iowa Panthers in the quarterfinals of the CollegeInsider.com Tournament at the McLeod Center.
The 21 rebounds by Dia set a record in the CollegeInsider.com Tournament. Collin Mangrum and Robert Nyakundi contributed 11 points apiece for SMU, which will play the winner of the Santa Clara/San Francisco.
Kwadzo Ahelegbe posted 18 points for Northern Iowa (20-14), while Jake Koch chipped in 11 points in the loss.
SMU went into the break with a 31-23 lead after shooting 57.1 percent from the floor.
In the second stanza the Mustangs used a defensive approach to stop Northern Iowa, as they limited the Panthers to just 26.9 percent shooting.
SMU was victorious because of its play defensively, as the Mustangs held UNI to under 30.0 percent shooting from the floor, and from behind the arc.
