Michigan State, UConn to open season in Germany

East Lansing, MI (Sports Network) - Michigan State will once again open its men's college basketball campaign in an unlikely place -- at Ramstein Air Base in Germany.

Last season, Michigan State and North Carolina started the season with the "Carrier Classic," when the two teams played on the USS Carl Vinson off the coast of San Diego in front of more than 8,000 servicemen and women.

Three locations piggybacked that idea this season, but the Spartans have one- upped themselves by agreeing to play Connecticut at the home of the U.S. Air Forces in Europe on November 9, the Friday before Veterans Day.

The game still needs approval from the Department of Defense.

"Being a part in the first college basketball game to be played on a military base overseas is truly an honor," Spartans head coach Tom Izzo said.

Three other games on November 9 will be played in front of servicemen and women: Florida and Georgetown will play off the coast of Jacksonville at Naval Station Mayport; Marquette will open its season on a ship off the coast of Charleston, SC against Ohio State, and Syracuse will face San Diego State on the flight deck of the USS Midway off the coast of San Diego.
